A place to begin
Notice what makes speaking difficult, then prepare around a shared goal, observed facts, likely implications and possible alternatives. Consider the actual conditions and risks of speaking up in your organization too.
The moment you hold back
You may nod at a decision and return to the team with a different view unspoken. Perhaps you fear losing trust or wonder whether a settled decision can be revisited. Hesitation need not be reduced to a lack of courage. Explore what you are protecting and how disagreement has been received in the past.
Separate the person from the proposal
Are you disagreeing with the person or with one part of the timing or method? You may share the goal while seeing a different risk. In your own language, try acknowledging the purpose and asking to examine one implication. Keep an untested prediction distinct from an observed fact, and leave room for information you do not yet hold.
Make the requested choice manageable
You might ask for one priority, one resource or one condition for reviewing the decision rather than trying to reverse the whole plan. Clarify what concerns you and what adjustment could help. Be open to revising your own view when new context emerges. Voicing a perspective and ensuring it is adopted are different goals.
Include the organization’s responsibility
Where speaking honestly may bring retaliation, this is more than a wording exercise. Explore appropriate support and trusted channels. Coaching can help the leader consider workable choices and needed protection, rather than pushing them into confrontation regardless of context. HR can examine how leaders above them respond to unwelcome information.
