Communicate upward and build influence across the organization

A SustainLead™ leadership practice guide

Women leaders in their early forties discussing support with a colleague

SUSTAINLEAD™ · PRACTICE 09

Based on questions and practice tools from GLO:B’s coaching program. This is not a client case or a claim of validated effectiveness.

When is this useful?

Explore how to secure direction, decisions and support from above, and cooperation across teams without direct authority. Connect organizational goals and different realities, then translate agreed direction into usable team criteria.

What can you try at work?

Prepare an upward conversation as request, facts and impact, options, recommendation. Ask another department about its reality, agree a shared outcome and make a specific request. Translate decisions back into priorities, work that can wait, decision criteria and risk-sharing conditions for the team.

You do not need to answer every workbook question. Choose what is useful now, prioritize the experiment agreed in coaching, and take three minutes afterward to note what happened, what you learned and your next choice.

A question for reflection

What conversation could connect our different goals and realities so we can choose and act together?

What can you record and review?

A working output

An upward request, a shared outcome and cross-team request, and usable team criteria

An observable signal

Notice clearer decisions and priorities, timely risk sharing and cooperation without direct authority. Connect recurring collaboration barriers with operating practices as well.

Review specific situations and choices alongside any numerical change. Consider other people’s perspectives and organizational conditions. These prompts are not individual appraisal criteria or guarantees of results.

How does this fit into coaching?

The ten-session 1on1 journey explores this theme in the leader’s context and priorities. Rather than prescribing an answer, the coach helps the leader choose a meaningful experiment and integrate what they learn.
