Choose your leadership response under stress and conflict

A SustainLead™ leadership practice guide

SUSTAINLEAD™ · PRACTICE 05

Based on questions and practice tools from GLO:B’s coaching program. This is not a client case or a claim of validated effectiveness.

When is this useful?

Notice bodily signals, impulses, what you are protecting and the impact others experience. Explore a small space to choose a response that respects people while maintaining necessary standards.

What can you try at work?

Revisit a recent situation and separate facts from interpretation, and a specific behavior from the whole person. Gently try a ten-second SOMATIC STOP: Sense, Take one breath, Observe, Proceed with choice. Choose the next action of the leader you want to be.

You do not need to answer every workbook question. Choose what is useful now, prioritize the experiment agreed in coaching, and take three minutes afterward to note what happened, what you learned and your next choice.

A question for reflection

Who do I want to be in front of this person, even when I must decide quickly and firmly?

What can you record and review?

A working output

Early bodily signals, a SOMATIC STOP question and an alternative response

An observable signal

Reflect on when you noticed the automatic reaction, changes in voice, posture or opening words, and the other person’s response. Focus on choosing again rather than always being calm.

Review specific situations and choices alongside any numerical change. Consider other people’s perspectives and organizational conditions. These prompts are not individual appraisal criteria or guarantees of results.

How does this fit into coaching?

The ten-session 1on1 journey explores this theme in the leader’s context and priorities. Rather than prescribing an answer, the coach helps the leader choose a meaningful experiment and integrate what they learn.
